Looks like another device for the (Palm) Missing Sync to support:

Garnet VM Beta for Nokia NSeries

There FAQ states "Note that the Network HotSync feature is not supported on Mac OS."

Do you have this device? Have you tried using it? If the device uses Wi-Fi then it should be able to sync over Wi-Fi using Missing Sync. But if the network sync to which they refer includes syncing over the Internet then it is not something that Missing Sync would be designed to do.

Sorry, I don't own one. Though it is suddenly more interesting if it can run Palm apps, and can sync via WiFi.

Thanks, Nathan.

Network HotSync was a method of syncing across the network back in the days when Palms did not have a built-in wireless networking connection. You either connected your Palm to a modem & dialed into the network, or you could connect your Palm to another PC on the network with the sync cable. This was only supported on Windows machines - Palm probably figured that Macs didn't have enough corporate installations to make it worth supporting them.

You can read more about it at Palm's website.

Missing Sync does have a Network sync. The Wi-Fi sync is actually not called 'Wi-Fi' but is called a Network sync, but Wi-Fi is what it is used for.

I've got an N770; it's really a cool device but I have to rely on rsync or simple file copy. It doesn't really have a standard PIM package, unfortunately; not sure what the N800 and N810 have (doesn't appear to be anything!). But, heck, if you can sync with a PSP. One option I'd like to see is a set of rsync directories that it would do one-way or two-way sync.

(I'm a long-time Missing Sync user, currently on my Treo 650).

Interesting device. But yeah, we don't have a Missing Sync for that device.

I'm currently using Missing Sync with my Treo 650. I got an n810 to replace it, since it has a decent OS, and I just got the Garnet VM installed.

At first glance, this might be a bootstrapping problem. If I could get the Missing Sync bits on there, then I *think* I should be able to do a Missing Sync over WiFi. Any suggestions appreciated. I'll post here if I figure anything out myself.

It would be great to be able to continue to use Missing Sync with this device, and make it so I don't have to hack up some rsync monstrosity for iApps.

I have no expectation that that device would work. The OS is: Internet Tablet OS 2008 and we don't support that device. We have:

Missing Sync for Palm OS to support Palm OS devices
Missing Sync for Windows Mobile to support Windows Mobile devices
Missing Sync for BlackBerry to support BlackBerry devices
Missing Sync for Sony PSP to sync data TO the device (one way)
Missing Sync for iPhone to sync data FROM the device (one way)
Missing Sync for Symbian (Coming soon) for Symbian devices.

Right, this thread is about the GarnetVM running on the n810. That's a virtual machine from the people who make PalmOS that runs PalmOS 5. They claim 80% application compatibility in their beta, including most of the big apps.

Well, if you get the device and try Missing Sync it would be great if you could share your experience on the forum.

I have a Nokia 770 running 2007 Hacker Edition of the OS. I have installed the Garnet VM & can say that it DOES sync with a Mac (running Leopard 10.5) & Missing Sync 6.0.2.

You just have to setup Missing Sync so that you can do Network Syncs, then you can choose the Network Sync option from the Garnet VM environment.

Note, that it doesn't use the old HotSync PalmOS program to do it, is done from the Garnet VM 'control panel'/launcher.

Remember, that this is just syncing the contents of the GarnetVM, which is totally separate from the Nokia OS (which is running a Debian based OS).

If anyone has any specific questions about this, then just reply to the thread & I'll see if I can help.

Oh yeah, I also sync my Palm TX to the same mac as the Nokia.

Thanks for posting this hyph-n. It's encouraging, and spurred me to keep at it.

I figured out that my primary problem was the Mac OS X firewall. I put in an entry for Network Hotsync based on web combings:

Image

and in Missing Synce I went to 'Add Handheld', added a new one, clicked the network button, made sure the world icon was lit-up on the main window of Missing Sync, and when I initiate a sync Missing Sync jumps into sync mode, throws up its progress window, but then quickly returns:

Code:
Sync did not complete successfully 2008-01-22 22:12:51 -0500

I must have missed a step...

@bill_mcgonigle i seem to recall that i initiated the hotsync from the N770, rather than from Missing Sync.

I'll give it another go later today, & see if i can post some screenshots :-)

I am new here. Thank you for the tips that have been posted. I just updated my N800 to the latest version of the OS (OS2008 ver. 2.2007.51.3)

I created an exception in the firewall exactly as bill_mcgonigle had. I enabled network synching and was able to successfully initiate a HotSync from within Garnet.

The hotsync failed mid-back-up and I haven't been able to synchronise them since. I've noticed that a failed attempt displays "Launching sync thread" in the HotSync status window on the N800. The successful one just said "Syncing"
